A boarding school education is a serious consideration for British Forces families to ensure stability of education for their children. With the frequent moves often required of British Forces families it is not unusual for Forces children to have attended 4 or 5 different schools by the age of 10yrs; this is disruptive to their continuity of education and also impacts on them socially.
The majority of Forces children are educated in LEA maintained day schools in the UK; there are approximately 500 boarding schools accredited by the Independent Schools Council (ISC) or the Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA) and approved by the Children’s Education Advisory Service. These schools understand the needs and special circumstances of Forces children.
Many service parents are eligible to claim the Continuity of Education Allowance (CEA), which provides assistance with meeting the boarding fee. Parents are required to contribute a minimum of 10% of the school fees; many independent schools offer a Forces Bursary which offer a reduction on the balance of the fee payable. Sibling discounts are also available, offering a discount for the second and subsequent children.
Parents are able to choose the school that is most appropriate for their children from the wide range of independent and state schools on the MoD Accredited Schools List – Anderson Education and The Education Clinic are experienced in working with British Forces families and helping them through this process.
